Step Off the Touristy Path in Italy with a Visit to Puglia

Of all the countries in Europe, Italy boasts the claim of being the most visited. The boot-shaped country jutting into the Mediterranean is home to famed cities like Rome, Venice, and Milan, though for a truly authentic slice of Italian life, you should pack your bags for Puglia.

Touristy Path in Italy with a Visit to Puglia

Tucked into what is called the ‘heel’ of Italy’s boot, Puglia is the place where brilliantly blue waters gently roll into the rocky beaches, where dramatic coastlines dotted with lighthouses await, and where olive tree valleys surround UNESCO sites. You’ll have the best of a seaside retreat, ample activities, and cuisine that will have you bursting with joy at the seams.

With so much to do and see, here are a few must-see places to go when you visit Puglia!

Alberobello

Check off another UNESCO World Heritage Site from your list. With historic streets and white-washed homes known as ‘Trullo,’ it’s like heading right back into the days of old. These old homes have cone-shaped roofs, the perfect discovery if you adore architecture. It also lends a close proximity to other areas of Puglia that you won’t want to miss.

Sant’Agata di Puglia

In the hills and mountains of Puglia, Sant’Agata di Puglia offers a more relaxed experience. This is where you go when you want to escape the normal pace of life and see truly Italian culture in the countryside.

The little central city square with a surrounding of cafés and benches is the prime place to join locals while sipping espressos in the morning or beer later in the day. The cuisine here is some of the most comforting there is, the kind you won’t get anywhere else unless you have a Nona from the Italian countryside!

Polignano a Mare

Polignano a Mare perhaps sets the image in your mind for Puglia with its coastal rocky cliffs and stunning waters. Head here if you want to be in one of the more famed spots of the region. You’ll have crowds to contend with in the peak of summer though in spring, you’ll largely have the place to yourself. The stunning views are the reason to be here so take them in with a cocktail and indulge in living the life.

Otranto

Another coastal town to enjoy while in Puglia is Otranto. Discover the national park and the Punta Palascia Lighthouse, ideal for hikes along the coast. There are rock formations and caves all along the area. You can also relax for swimming in the waters, though be sure not to miss the Otranto Cathedral, a massive complex with spectacular mosaics and a hushed atmosphere where it contains the bones of martyrs gone ages ago.

As is the case with every region in Italy, Puglia offers that warm and inviting Italian hospitality. However, because it’s lesser known than more popular destinations, you’ll find it the perfect way to experience the true charm of Italy.
